Arsenal are yet to make progress on a new contract for German midfielder Mesut Ozil, and the talented player has been linked with joining Manchester United next year.
However, it appears the Old Trafford club will face competition to get the player’s signature after Schalke made it known that they are interested in bringing Ozil back to the Bundesliga.
Mesut came through Schalke’s youth system before becoming a first-team player for the club. He was signed by Werder Bremen in 2008 before moving to the La Liga to play at Real Madrid.
After enjoying three successful years at the Bernabeu, he was lured into the premier league by Arsenal, and he remains one of the most influential players at the Emirates right now.
However, his current deal with the London club will expire at the end of the season, and there has been little progress in talks over a new contract.
And amid speculations about Ozil’s interest in reuniting with his former manager Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford, a top official at Schalke Clemens Tonnies, has confirmed that they will do all it takes to bring the German star back to his home country, and his return ‘would be a nice story’.
The player has put in a handful of brilliant performances for Arsenal this term, and he also helped his side beat Tottenham 2-0 on Saturday.
